Coin Evaluation is a very important skill to all collectors. It is very important to draw a fine line between “Price and Value”. The Price of a coin is what a collector would pay for the price of that particular coin; the Value is the asking price by the collector.

Here are some tips on understanding the coin attributes that makes coins valuable:

1-The condition of the coin is one of the things that sets the value of a coin.

2- The Value of the coin is determined on how well it was originally struck, how well the metal has been kept, if it is an MS65 <> MS70 or PR69 <> PR70 grade and if the coin has any wear marks.

3- Look for Proof coins, these coins is specially minted coins with highly polished dies, which finishes off the coin with a mirror like surface.

4- DCAM coins are proof coins that usually have a frosty surface with a mirror like surface around the portrait. Looking for these types of coins will proof beneficial to the collector.

5- One of the major factors in determining the value is the amount of Gold or Silver the coin contains.

6- Invest in a coin dictionary, these dictionaries carry a glossary of coins and helps collectors determine the value of coins easily.

What makes a coin valuable?
Coin values are based on Mintage, Rarity, Grade and collector demand. Rare low mintage coins nowadays are at a high demand. When searching look for rarity and how many of those still exists today. Relative rarity is what brings demand, a particular date and mintmark from a more popular series. Popularity can apply to the coinage of entire countries as well.

A coin is graded on its present condition or state it has been kept in and if it has been preserved the way it was minted.

While the date and mintmark can be determined by a beginner and coin mintages information can be obtained with a little research, an experienced numismatist is essential to evaluate a coins grade. Before pricing your coins, grading is a must.

Rarity: the determination of how common or rare a coin is.

Mintage: the quantity made or minted of a coin.
