Understanding the benefits of collecting error coins
by D. L. Crane

Error coins can prove to be very beneficial, Error coins are coins which are improperly made when manufacturing, this are also called Mint error coins. These coins may be struck off centre, or have the wrong placket type, which could be thick or thin and many more problems that can occur during manufacturing. The Mint tries very hard to catch any errors but some do get by. Those that do usually carry a premium value.

There are a number of valuable error coins in circulation. These are normally overlooked by collectors because they have small distinguishing characteristics that only error coin collectors look for.

The most important thing is to teach yourself which coins are valuable and why. Error coins are becoming more popular with collectors, some are just interested in getting their hands on something rare, and others are more interested in what went wrong during the minting process.

Here are some of the most common of error and mint error coins:

1) An Off Centre struck coin are the most known error in numismatic. This usually occurs when the blank doesn’t land properly on the collar.

2) Broadstrike is another form of error coin, this is error occurs almost the same way a an off centre error happens, in this coin the design can be off centre but the lettering, and portrait are never missing from this coin. No portraits are missing from the coin.

3) Error coins with double strikes this happens when the error coins fail to eject form the collar. This means the coin is struck by the dies more than once which causes marks on the coin.

4) Brockages - this happens when a coin sticks to the upper die striking the blank coin , the blank coin will have a mirror affect image of the coin which is stuck on the new coins surface

5) Indents this happens when two coin blanks are placed in one collar. When the upper die strikes it causes a depression on the below coin, this is a rare error coin.

You do not need talent, or skill when starting out with your collection, and you basically do not need a lot of skill. Many Americans have started their collection from their own pockets, collecting Quarters, and trying to put together a complete set of one of each State Quarter right out of your pocket is not always at all. Searching through nickels from rolls purchased from the banks is maybe another way to start your collection. It is easy to say that recently the most looked for coins are Error coins , some of which are worth thousands .Error coins are easy to seek under a 7x or 10x magnifier and maybe the easiest way to find them is being able to go through a lot of change quickly .

Here are some useful hints on how to find Error coins in your own pockets:
Always examine your coins so the best way is to sort your coins out . Check all your pennies, nickels and try and find differences between the coins,

If the error is hard to see with a 10x magnifier, then it is not worth a lot of money. It is important to look for letters that do not seem right and are unusual, such as doubling in the words, polish or grease, look at the coin from different angles. You should always focus on the date and mint mark as these may be the most errors that make the coin valuable. Check the die rotation as the US mint take care in making sure the die is perfect , so the coins you find which are out of rotation maybe valuable .Check the edge and look for missing edges , missing or doubled letters most importantly.

Always set aside coins that look odd, you will get used to the procedure the more practice. You may be holding on to a very valuable coin so watch out.

Getting reference books for guides isn’t a bad idea especially for beginners, the most recommended is the Official price guide to min errors, and this book should set you on the right track.
